In this chapter,it will firstly discuss the background of the present study, whichincludes the importance of pronunciation, the necessity of the study of learningstrategies, and the significance of this study. Then it is followed by the purpose andhypotheses of this study.

1.1 Background of the Present Study

1.1.1 The Importance of Pronunciation Learning

Pronunciation is the indispensable element of a language and is also thefoundation in second and foreign language learning.Gimson(1989:3)states that“tospeak any language a person must know nearly 100%of its phonetics, while only50-90%of its grammar and 1%of the vocabulary may be sufficient”,which showsthe importance of pronunciation learning.

  For Gloria Poedjosoedarmo(2007),there are two major reasons forpronunciation learning which are often cited.One is to improve intelligibility.Theother is to allow students to create a favorable impression in situations such as jobinterviews.Besides these two main reasons,there are other reasons for learningpronunciation.Pronunciation has a very important influence on the acquisition ofother language skills,such as writing,listening,speaking and reading.Only if thephonetic features such as elision,liaison,strong and weak form,intonation patternsand stress,are understood and mastered by learners,can they listen more easily;

pronunciation make word spelling easy and improve vocabulary memory;in cognitivepsychology’s view, phonological ability is indispensable in reading process;etc.Goodpronunciation can also help learners establish confidence and motivation.Wang(2001)proves that students with good pronunciation will have an enhanced self-concept anda sense of achievement in learning a foreign language.

Because of the important role that pronunciation plays in second and foreignage acquisition, pronunciation learning and teaching should be attached enoughattention.

1.1.2 The Necessity of the Study of Language Learning Strategies

In the long history of second and foreign language learning, the most importantfactor in learning, the learner, had been neglected for a long time.Since the views onlearning and teaching have been changed, there is a move from teacher-centered tolearner-centered classrooms which shift the focus from the teacher to the learner andemphasize how to learn by learners themselves. And more and more researchersrealize learner’s involvement is the most important reason for learners’progress inlearning.

Meanwhile, the rapid development of the science and technology requirelearners’self-directed learning. The competition is not only the competition of theamount of acquired knowledge, but also the study abilities. Now the aim of theeducation is not just teach students what to learn but to teach students how to study.

Therefore, under such crucial social background, what should be done is try tocultivate students'comprehensive abilities for self-study.Researches on learners’individual differences have rapidly increased. Those researches demonstrated that theindividual factors such as age, sex, attitude, motivation, personality, cognitive style, and learning strategies affect second and foreign language learning.

Among those individual factors, language learning strategies attract manyresearchers’interests(Rubin,1975;Wenden,1983;Oxford,1990;Cohen,1998;Hsiaoand Oxford,2002).Researchers believe that students who use effective learningstrategies are better able to work outside the classroom by themselves, given effectivelearning strategies, even the ineffective learners could be in a better position to solvetheir problems in language learning and what is more, students with appropriatelearning strategies have greater self-confidence.Therefore,it is necessary for theeducators to cultivate students’language learning strategies. The Significance of the StudyFor what have been mentioned above, pronunciation and language learningstrategies are significant in second and foreign language learning. However, thecurrent situation of pronunciation teaching is not optimistic. The neglect of thesignificance of pronunciation, the simple teaching methods for pronunciation teachingand the unbalance of the teaching contents are the major problems for pronunciationteaching.Meanwhile, researches on pronunciation mainly focus on the teachingstrategies, few studies concern about learners and there are just a few researches onpronunciation learning and teaching from the perspective of language learningstrategies.Wen and Wang(2004)also point out that there is a severe imbalance withinthe researches into the learning strategies of lexicon, grammar and pronunciation.Inorder to help learners get a more effective and efficient pronunciation learning,it isnecessary to know about what the English learners do in their English pronunciationlearning process. Therefore,it is significant to explore the situation of their use ofpronunciation learning strategies.

Meanwhile, there are few researches focuses on English pronunciation strategiesof English majors of three-year-program.College education which refers to thethree-year-program of under graduation education is an important part of highereducation, which has its own characteristics and problems, such as the unsystematicpronunciation learning and teaching, the teachers’low-teaching level and the students’weak foundation and lack of initiative. Therefore, for the teachers,it is of necessity topromote the student-oriented teaching method to enhance the students’initiative andteach students more about learning strategies in the process of learning pronunciation.

For the English majors of three-year-program,they need to pay more attention topronunciation learning strategies which enable them to gain more effective andefficient learning on pronunciation.

Research is necessary to be carried out to find out the overall use of Englishpronunciation learning strategies of English majors of three-year-program,explore thecorrelation between English pronunciation learning strategies and Englishnciation learning achievement, and figure out the differences in the use ofpronunciation learning strategies between high achievers and low achievers.

1.2 The Purposes and the Hypotheses of the Thesis

This thesis aims at exploring the use of English pronunciation learning strategiesemployed by English majors of three-year-program,which has the followingpurposes:Firstly, this study might provide more empirical data to the study of Englishpronunciation learning of English majors(three-year-program).

Secondly, this study might give some help for teachers to have a thoroughunderstanding about the pronunciation learning strategies used by English majors ofthree-year-program,which might shed some valuable light on how to improve Englishpronunciation teaching and guide students develop effective pronunciation learningstrategies.

The present study attempts to answer the following questions:(1)What is the overall use of English pronunciation learning strategies employedby English majors(three-year-program)?(2)Is there any correlation between English pronunciation learning strategiesand English pronunciation achievements?(3)What kind of English pronunciation learning strategies has predictive powerover English pronunciation learning achievements?(4)How different is the use of English pronunciation learning strategiesemployed by high achievers and low achievers? The major hypotheses are:(1)English majors(three-year-program)use a variety of English pronunciationstrategies and some are more frequently used than others.

(2)English pronunciation learning strategies are positively correlated withEnglish pronunciation achievements.

(3)The overall pronunciation learning strategies have predictive power onEnglish pronunciation learning achievement.

(4)There are differences in the use of English pronunciation learning strategiesbetween high achievers and low achievers.

  1.3 Layout of the Thesis

This thesis includes five chapters as follows:Chapter one provides a brief introduction to the research background includingthe significance of pronunciation learning strategies, the necessity of the study oflearning strategies and the significance of the present study, the research purposes andhypotheses of the thesis, and the layout of this thesis.

Chapter two gives a related literature review of researches in language learningstrategies and pronunciation learning strategies.

Chapter three introduces the methodology of the present study including subjects, research instruments, data collection and analysis procedures.

Chapter four presents the data descriptions and discussions of the presentresearch.According to the data analysis, the answers to the four research questionswill be provided.

Chapter five summarizes the major findings of this study, and points out theimplications to the teaching and learning of English pronunciation and gives somerecommendations for enhancing English Majors(three-year-program)’pronunciationlearning and teaching. Finally, the limitations and the suggestions for the futureresearches will also be involved in this part.
